FAQ
What is Pharmacogenomics testing?
Pharmacogenomics is the study of how a person’s genes can affect their response to drugs. This combines pharmacology (the science of drugs) and genomics (the study of genes and their functions) to develop a highly accurate method of determining safe medication doses that will be tailored to a person’s genetic makeup.
Traditionally, pharmaceuticals have been developed using a “one-size-fits-all” approach with the assumption that medications work the same way regardless of the person taking them. This forces most people to engage in a trial and error process to find the best medicine with the least amount of side effects. Unfortunately, this is not extremely effective and has resulted in the FDA labeling more than 200 medications with black box warnings of adverse reactions and potential risks with the medications.
A Pharmacogenomic (PGx) Panel utilizes a onetime cheek swab which is processed through a Genomics GeneDose Protocol to determine whether you have a specific genetic variants that can influence a drug’s metabolism, drug to drug interactions and side effect potential. This knowledge can influence dosing of the drug and often, influence the choice of medication. It can also alert physicians to avoid specific drugs altogether.
The GeneDose Report is then provided to you in an extremely thorough report which will evaluate areas such as clotting risk, side effect potential, drug to drug interactions and expected efficacy.
Who should get a Pharmacogenomic panel?
For those wanting to reduce the time and money needed for trial and error medications, a pharmacogenomic test may be the perfect solution to finding the right prescription. Information about your genetic makeup may be the greatest weapon against a particular ailment or invasive procedure. If you have been frustrated with your lack of success with various prescription drugs, the answer may lie within your genes.
Patients who require Pharmacogenomic (PGx) testing have or have experienced:
• Previous Drug Reactions
• Family History of Drug Reactions
• Chemical Sensitivities
• Multiple Health Issues
• Taking Multiple Medications
• Poor Communication Skills
What is Nutrigenomics testing?
Nutrigenomics is the study of the relationship between our genes and how they respond to the nutrients we consume. By analyzing individual genetic variations, nutrigenomics sheds light on how our bodies process and utilize nutrients, as well as how these nutrients influence the expression of our genes.
Through nutrigenomics, we can uncover personalized insights into how specific foods and dietary components interact with our unique genetic makeup. This knowledge allows us to tailor nutrition plans that are precisely suited to each individual's genetic profile, maximizing the potential for optimal health outcomes.
With nutrigenomic testing, we can design customized nutrition strategies aimed at promoting wellness, preventing disease, and supporting long-term vitality to unlock the full potential of your health and well-being.
How can Nutrigenomics benefit me?
Nutrigenomics looks at how your genes interact with your diet, providing insights into the best nutrition plan for your genetic makeup to optimize your health.
What does a personalized wellness plan include?
A personalized wellness plan integrates pharmacogenomics and nutrigenomics findings to create a comprehensive health plan tailored to your unique genetic profile, including regular check-ins and adjustments based on your progress.
How often do I need to take this test?
This test is done one time in a lifetime, and it will help you now with current and future medications.
What is required to complete the PGx test?
The PGx test process is simple and painless. Once your test is ordered, a test kit will be shipped directly to your home. All that is required is either a simple cheek swab or saliva collection that you do yourself. All of your instructions are included inside the kit. Follow all instructions closely to make sure that an adequate DNA sample is obtained and reduce the possibility of needing to repeat the test. Once you complete the test, you will return the sample per the instructions using the enclosed return label and a provider will connect with you to review your results and discuss recommendations.
Can this be done virtually?
Yes, the test will be sent to your home and a provider will call you to discuss your results. You never have to leave your home.
